Nanfang PlusRecently, with end-to-end guidance from the Zhongshan Intellectual Property Protection Center, four items of brain-computer interface (BCI) data intellectual property applied for by Guangdong Shenwu Technology Co., Ltd., including the "EEG Dataset for Eyes-Closed Resting Scenarios Involving a Cohort of 1,000 Participants", have been registered on the Guangdong Provincial Data Intellectual Property Registration and Evidence Preservation Platform, and registration certificates have been issued. These are the first BCI data intellectual property registrations on the platform, filling a gap in the protection of intellectual property relating to neural data collected from groups across multiple scenarios in the field of BCI in Guangdong Province.
The EEG datasets registered on this occasion comprise empirical data from what is described as the world's first cross-regional synchronized EEG data collection involving more than 1,000 people. The data acquisition device weighs only 21 grams and supports eight-channel multimodal acquisition at research-grade precision, allowing EEG data to be collected naturally in everyday settings. The data collection covered four scenarios: eyes-closed rest, aesthetic appreciation of classical Chinese poetry, aesthetic appreciation of dance, and aesthetic appreciation of songs. Following registration and the documentation of associated rights and interests, the datasets will be made openly available to researchers, providing high-quality open data resources for research into BCI, cognitive neuroscience, and embodied intelligence. They will also provide a reference model for the compliant collection and industrial application of neural data.
To achieve synchronized data collection across different regions involving more than 1,000 participants, the R&D team overcame two major technical challenges. The first was achieving both device miniaturization and signal accuracy: the device was reduced to 21 grams while maintaining research-grade data acquisition quality. The second was millisecond-level temporal alignment: the team overcame the effects of network latency to achieve precise synchronization across multiple devices and regions, ensuring that EEG signals from different sources could be analyzed consistently and compared horizontally.
The scarcity of EEG data has long been a key bottleneck constraining the development of foundational BCI models. Unlike language corpora, which have accumulated over thousands of years, modern EEG research has a history of only around a century, and the stock of high-quality real-world EEG data available for training large models remains extremely limited. The synchronized data collection involving more than 1,000 participants can generate more than 1,000 hours of real-world EEG data in a single session, offering a feasible approach to rapidly building a foundational EEG data resource.
Compared with traditional EEG datasets based on small samples, this batch of datasets features large sample sizes, real-world scenarios, comparisons across multiple devices, and a wide variety of tasks. It can provide standardized data support for foundational EEG model training, cross-device transfer learning, artifact suppression in naturalistic settings, and the analysis of neural synchrony across groups. This means that BCI technology is moving from "individual-level analysis" toward "learning patterns across groups", while also strengthening the data foundation for the integration of brain science and artificial intelligence in Zhongshan.
The registration and evidence preservation of data intellectual property represents an important institutional exploration under the market-oriented allocation mechanism for data resources. The registration certificates record key information, including data sources, application scenarios, processing rules, and the allocation of rights and interests. They can effectively serve as evidence of enterprises' legitimate rights and interests in the relevant data, providing supporting documentation for independent use, collaborative development, and the substantiation of claims in rights enforcement proceedings.
Zhongshan is currently accelerating the development of future-oriented industries, including BCI and artificial intelligence. The collective registration of these four items of data intellectual property extends data intellectual property protection into the field of neural data, providing a replicable and scalable practical model for the compliant collection, standardized processing, and industrial application of BCI data.
The Zhongshan Intellectual Property Protection Center stated that it will continue to improve the public service system for data intellectual property, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as BCI and artificial intelligence. It will promote the recognition and documentation of rights in data assets and the realization of their value by more innovation-driven entities, thereby injecting fresh momentum into the development of new quality productive forces in Zhongshan.
